Polymers in Curved Boxes

چکیده
We apply results derived in other contexts for the spectrum of the Laplace operator in curved geometries to the study of an ideal polymer chain confined to a spherical annulus in arbitrary space dimension D and conclude that the free energy compared to its value for an uncurved box of the same thickness and volume, is lower when D < 3, stays the same when D = 3, and is higher when D > 3. Thus confining an ideal polymer chain to a cylindrical shell, lowers the effective bending elasticity of the walls, and might induce spontaneous symmetry breaking, i.e. bending. (Actually, the above mentioned results show that any shell in D = 3 induces this effect, except for a spherical shell). We compute the contribution of this effect to the bending rigidities in the Helfrich free energy expression.

Simulation of polymers in a curved box : Variable range bond - ing models
– We propose new polymer models for Monte Carlo simulation and apply them to a polymer chain confined in a relatively thin box which has both curved and flat sides, and show that either an ideal or an excluded-volume chain spends more time in the curved region than in the flat region. The ratio of the probability of finding a chain in the curved region and in flat region increases exponentially...
متن کاملFtsZ bacterial cytoskeletal polymers on curved surfaces: the importance of lateral interactions.
A recent theoretical article provided a mechanical explanation for the formation of cytoskeletal rings and helices in bacteria assuming that these shapes arise, at least in part, from the interaction of the inherent mechanical properties of the protein polymers and the constraints imposed by the curved cell membrane (Andrews, S., and A. P. Arkin. 2007. Biophys. J. 93:1872-1884). Due to the lack...
متن کاملJ un 1 99 7 Rods Near Curved Surfaces and in Curved Boxes
We consider an ideal gas of infinitely rigid rods near a perfectly repulsive wall, and show that the interfacial tension of a surface with rods on one side is lower when the surface bends towards the rods. Surprisingly we find that rods on both sides of surfaces also lower the energy when the surface bends. We compute the partition functions of rods confined to spherical and cylindrical open sh...
متن کاملControlling adsorption of semiflexible polymers on planar and curved substrates.
We study the adsorption of semiflexible polymers such as polyelectrolytes or DNA on planar and curved substrates, e.g., spheres or washboard substrates via short-range potentials using extensive Monte Carlo simulations, scaling arguments, and analytical transfer matrix techniques. We show that the adsorption threshold of stiff or semiflexible polymers on a planar substrate can be controlled by ...
متن کاملExploiting Local Orientation Similarity for Efficient Ray Traversal of Hair and Fur
Hair and fur typically consist of a large number of thin, curved, and densely packed strands which are difficult to ray trace efficiently. A tight fitting spatial data structure, such as a bounding volume hierarchy (BVH), is needed to quickly determine which hair a ray hits. However, the large number of hairs can yield a BVH with a large memory footprint (particularly when hairs are pre-tessell...
